Why you shouldn’t stay on Magento 1

Home - Uncategorized - Why you shouldn’t stay on Magento 1

We understand that many Magento 1 merchants are currently facing a dilemma when it comes to their store. With support for Magento 1 coming to an end in June, many merchants have to make a critical decision now, upgrade to Magento 2 or migrate to a different provider.

The issue with upgrading is that eventually Magento 2 will reach end-of-life as well and then another upgrade will have to follow. At Ogg, we’re firm believers of ongoing support and that’s why we’ve thrown our weight behind BigCommerce.

One of the beauties of the SaaS model is that the software is kept up to date with the latest features, functions and best practices. Cloud ERP providers roll out updates on a regular basis (as often as monthly, in Oracle’s case).

This means that the latest technologies become available to subscribers on a regular basis. However, not all cloud software systems are made the same and finding the right one can be difficult.

Why you need to migrate

If you continue using Magento 1 after June 1, 2020:

Your risk of a data breach will increase – Magento 1 users will become a security target after June 1, 2020. The damage to your brand and reputation from such a breach can be long-lasting.

You may not be compliant with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS) – The PCI DSS global standards are set by card schemes (such as Visa and Mastercard) and apply to all merchants that process payments.

One of these requirements, Requirement 6, is that you will implement security patches to keep your payment-related systems safe and secure – If you continue using Magento 1 after June 1, without additional security measures, you may no longer comply with this Requirement as Magento will stop releasing security patches.

As a result, you can be fined between 10,000 and 25,000 EUR per month by card schemes.

Here are three key factors to keep in mind as you choose your new system:

Ongoing support – Your cloud commerce solution provider should provide ongoing support, regardless of where you are in the integration process. You should always feel comfortable reaching out to your provider.

Supply chain visibility – You should get a complete set of inventory management, manufacturing, and purchasing features to help streamline your supply chain. On top of this, you should also have a real-time view of key suppliers, inventory and order indicators.

Quote-to-quote process – Your platform’s order and billing management module should integrate with your sales, finance, and fulfilment operations to eliminate any bottlenecks. This streamlines the entire order and sales process, meaning you can get more done in less time.
